| King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor, the son of Henry IV and Berta of Savoy. He forced his father to abdicate. He clashed with the pope in the ‘investiture contest’, but with the Sutri accord (1111) relinquished any rights to elect bishops. He was also promised that the properties received by the church from Charlemagne would be returned. Crowned emperor by the pope (1111), he was subsequently excommunicated and the accord reneged. Henry opposed antipope Gregory VIII to the pope, but finally reached an agreement with new Pope Callisto II (Worms concordat, 1122). |
