| US representative, born in Carrollton, Illinois, USA. A lawyer, he was master in chancery for Greene Co, IL (1887–95). A Democrat in the US House of Representatives (1903–21), he spent most of his life in Congress, with one break as a farmer after his only election loss. Returning to the House (1923–34), he became majority leader and then Speaker of the House (1933–4) before his untimely death. |
