| US senator and governor, born in Farquier Co, Virginia, USA. Elected to the US Senate (Democrat, Mississippi, 1847–52), he resigned to serve as governor of the state (1852–4). A Union-Democrat, he later represented Tennessee in the Confederate Congress, resigning to protest Jefferson Davis's policies. After the war he was appointed superintendent of the US Mint in New Orleans. |
