| biography:
| Jurist, born in Chesterfield Co, Virginia, USA, the son of St George Tucker. He served as a soldier in the War of 1812, then became a member of the Virginia house and senate and the US House of Representatives (Democrat-Republican, Virginia, 1815–19). He became a superior court judge (1824–31) and was elected president of the Virginia Supreme Court in 1831. In 1841 he became professor of law at the University of Virginia, initiating its ‘Honor System’. In addition to important legal commentaries, he wrote light verse. |
