| US representative and senator, born in Sharpsburg, Kentucky, USA. A Whig appointee from Indiana, he served in Congress (1840–3), then left to fight in the Mexican-American war. Joining the Republican Party in support of its anti-slavery policy, he championed the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. He was a one-term senator (1861–7) who returned to being a banker and Republican Party activist in Indiana. |
