| University president and philosopher, born in Rhinebeck on the Hudson, New York, USA. He gained international recognition as a philosopher with his works on free will in the 1830s and 1840s. As president of the University of Michigan (1852–63), he helped develop it into a great research institution modelled on German universities. |
