| Theologian, born in North Stoneham, Hampshire, S England, UK. He studied at Oxford, was ordained in 1852, and became vice-principal of Cuddesdon Theological College (1854–9), a prebendary of Salisbury (1864), a canon of St Paul's (1870), and professor of exegesis at Oxford until 1882. He strongly opposed the Church Discipline Act of 1874, supported Gladstone's crusade against the Bulgarian atrocities (1876), and was the most able and eloquent exponent of Liberal High Church principles. |
