| biography:
| Socialist writer and political journalist, born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Glasgow University, and became assistant professor of logic there, leaving to join the Greek Foreign Legion in the war with Turkey (1897). His Socialism was pre-eminently international in outlook and was the key to everything he did (see The War of Steel and Gold, 1914). He joined the Independent Labour Party in 1907 and edited its weekly publication, The New Leader (1922–6). |
