| US senator, born in Everett, Washington, USA. He served in the US House of Representatives (Democrat, Washington, 1941–53) and in the US Senate (1953–83). Known as the ‘Senator from Boeing’, he was a staunch supporter of the interests of his state's defence industry, and also advocated an anti-Soviet foreign policy. He was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1972 and 1976. |
