| English soldier, born in Attenborough, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and in the Civil War fought for parliament, serving at Edgehill, Naseby, and the siege of Bristol. Cromwell's son-in-law from 1646, he was one of the most implacable enemies of the king, and signed the warrant for his execution. He accompanied Cromwell to Ireland, and in 1650 became lord deputy. He died of the plague during the siege of Limerick. |
