| biography:
| English statesman and soldier, born in Montfort, C France. Well received by Henry III of England in 1230, he was confirmed in his title and estates in 1232, and in 1238 married the king's youngest sister, Eleanor. As the king's deputy in Gascony (1248), he put down disaffection with a heavy hand. He returned to England in 1253, became the leader of the barons in their opposition to the king, and defeated him at Lewes (1264). He then became virtual ruler of England, calling a parliament in 1265; but the barons soon grew dissatisfied with his rule, and the king's army defeated him at Evesham, where he was killed. |
