| biography:
| King of Castile and León (1379–90), the son of Henry II of Castile. He attacked Portugal to defeat the alliance created by King Ferdinand of Portugal and John of Gaunt, who had a claim to the throne of Castile through his wife. Ferdinand made peace in 1382 and gave his daughter to John I in marriage. After Ferdinand's death (1383), John I again made war with Portugal, but was defeated at Aljubarrota (1385). He appeased John of Gaunt by arranging the marriage between his own son, the future King Henry III of Castile and León, with one of John's daughters. |
