| biography:
| English navigator, who explored the NE coast of North America, making claims for both the English and the Dutch. Nothing is known about his early life. He sailed in search of a passage across the Pole (1607), reached Novaya Zemlya (1608), entered the river which was named after him (1609), and (1610) travelled through the strait and bay which now bear his name. He resolved to winter there, but food ran short, the men mutinied, and he and eight others were cast adrift to die. |
