| British educationist and classical scholar. He studied at Oxford, taught at Rugby School, and became headmaster of Liverpool Institute, then retired early to devote himself to the service of the countryside and its protection from vandalism. He was instrumental in opening the first Youth Hostels in Britain (1931), and served as treasurer, later vice-president, of the Friends of the Lake District. His book, Walking in the Lakes District (1933), became one of the classic guides. |
