| British paper-maker and inventor. With his brother Sealy (d.1847) and the assistance of Bryan Donkin he patented in 1806 an improved design of a paper-making machine (first developed in France by Louis Robert in 1799) capable of producing a continuous sheet of paper. The same basic type of machine, with further improvements, is still in use today. |
