| Journalist and scriptwriter, born in Auckland, New Zealand. He went to England in 1914 to study medicine, but turned instead to writing. He wrote scripts for the radio comedy programme ITMA, which was extremely popular during World War 2, and whose anarchic humour influenced much subsequent British comedy.
