| biography:
| Canadian soldier, born in Hamilton, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at Upper Canada College and the Royal Military College, Kingston, and worked as a civil engineer while holding a commission in the militia. In World War 2 he was chief of Canadian army staff (1940–1), commanded the 2nd Canadian Division (1942) and the Canadian Corps in Italy (1942–4), and succeeded Andrew McNaughton in command of the Canadian Land Forces in Europe (1944). |
