| Journalist and reformer, born in New York City, USA. He studied at Columbia, lectured in economics, was admitted to the bar (1869), and became secretary of the American Free Trade League. He worked on the Chicago Tribune as a member of the editorial staff (1872–85). He became dedicated to the exposure of capitalist abuses, and his masterpiece, Wealth Against Commonwealth (1894), was a searing indictment of the methods by which John D Rockefeller built up Standard Oil. |
