| US soldier, born in Hampton, New Hampshire, USA. A Revolutionary War veteran, he served as secretary of war during Jefferson's two terms (1801–9). Assigned command of the critical NE theatre at the outbreak of the War of 1812, he managed affairs so incompetently that he was removed in July 1813. |
