| Biologist and physician, born in Truro, Cornwall, SW England, UK. He studied at University College London, where he became professor of pathological anatomy (1867), hospital physician (1871), and professor of clinical medicine (1887–95). He championed the doctrine of spontaneous generation, and became one of the founders of British neurology through his work on aphasia. |
