| English clergyman, the second illegitimate son of John of Gaunt and his mistress Catherine Swynford, and half-brother of Henry IV. He was chancellor three times (1403–4, 1413–17, and 1424–6), and in 1426 was made a cardinal. In 1431 he conducted the young King Henry VI to Paris, to be crowned as King of France and England, and for several years was the dominant figure in his government. |
