| Poet, playwright, and patriot, born in Kristiansand, S Norway. He is best known for his poetry, notably his Creation epic, Skabelsen, Mennesket, og Messias (1830, Creation, Humanity, and Messiah), and for such narrative poems as Den Engelske Lods (1844, The English Pilot). A leader of the cause of Norwegian nationalism, he became Norway's national poet. |
