| biography:
| Poet and writer, born in Noordwijk, W Netherlands. A Marxist, she was a friend and admirer of Gorter, with whom she shared the idealism of a brotherhood of men. In her work one can recognize the struggle between her social ideals and individualism, but she never lost faith in humanity and the power of love. She was an active member of the Dutch Socialist Party (SDAP) from 1897 until 1911, and after a disappoining visit to Russia in 1921, she mellowed her communist ideas and became a religious socialist until her death. In addition to poetry, she wrote plays and essays. |
