| Dutch politician and trade union leader, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Until 1940 he was president of the Diamond Cutters Union (Algemene Diamantbewerkersbond), which he founded in 1894. He was in the Upper House (1913–22, 1923–7) for the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP), of which he was a co-founder. He was arrested by the Germans in 1940 at the age of 72, and died shortly after he was released in late 1942. |
