| biography:
| Novelist and playwright, born in Paris, France. He was severely wounded in World War 1, after which he travelled in Spain, Africa, and Italy. His major work is an elegantly written four-novel cycle, beginning with Les jeunes filles and Pitié pour les femmes (1936, published together as Pity for Women), in which he portrays women as willing and shallow tools of men. After 1942 he wrote several plays, including Malatesta (1946) and Don Juan (1958). He committed suicide in 1972. |
