| Sculptor and graphic artist, born in Paris, France. He worked as an illustrator, stonemason, and interior decorator before he became involved in sculpting, becoming one of the most inventive Cubist sculptors after 1911, when he became associated with Picasso, Braque, and Léger. His works were in stone, improvised materials, and bronze. He was a leading exponent of three-dimensional Cubism, and modelled many works with a marine theme, including ‘Bathing Girl’ (1947). The Musée nationale d'art moderne in Paris houses his largest collection. Among his works are ‘Mask’ (1918), ‘The Bottle of Beaune’ (1918), and ‘Autumn’ (1948). |
