| biography:
| Primitive painter, born in Laval, NW France. He worked for many years as a minor customs official, hence his nickname. Retiring in 1885, he spent his time painting and copying at the Louvre, and exhibited for several years at the Salon des Indépendants. He produced painstaking portraits, exotic imaginary landscapes, and dreams, such as ‘Sleeping Gypsy’ (1897, New York City). |
