| biography:
| French soldier, born in Paris, France. He trained at St Cyr, served in Morocco, and was captured by the Germans during World War 1. After the war he rose to become chief-of-staff of the Moroccan Division. In early 1940 he commanded in turn the French 7th and 9th armies, again suffering capture and internment by the Germans. Escaping his captors in 1942, he was taken to North Africa, where he became commander of the Free French forces. He was co-president of the French Committee of National Liberation (1943–4) with General de Gaulle, and vice-president of the Supreme War Council after the war. |
