| Dutch army officer, born in Maastricht, S Netherlands. At the time of the German invasion in May 1940 he was supreme commander of the Dutch forces, and had to make the decision to lay down their arms after the evacuation of the royal family and the government to England. Throughout the war he was a prisoner-of-war in Germany and was honourably discharged from the service after his release in 1945. |
