| biography:
| Film-maker, born in Niort, W France. A major figure in French cinema, he caused a controversy with his film Le Corbeau (1943) which painted a critical picture of provincial society. His later films, such as Quai des Orfèvres (1947), Manon (1949), Les Diaboliques (1955), La Vérité (1960), and Le Salaire de la Peur (1963), demonstrate his perfectionism, his ability to bring out the best in actors, his existential approach, and his non-judgemental and detailed study of human behaviour. |
