| Jurist, born in Limoges, C France. A steady defender of the rights of the people and of the Gallican Church, he was advocate general and attorney general to the Parlement of Paris, and three times Chancellor of France under Louis XV (1717–18, 1720–22, 1737–50). He improved court procedures, and achieved greater uniformity in law enforcement. |
