| Pioneer aviator and aircraft manufacturer, born in Paris, France. With his brother Maurice Farman (1878–1964) he became involved with aircraft in 1908, winning a prize for a circular flight of 1 km. In 1912 they established a factory at Boulogne-sur-Seine to manufacture the Farman biplane, and built the first long-distance passenger plane, the Goliath, in 1917. They were the first to use ailerons, which are now standard fittings on all aircraft. |
