| Archaeologist, born in Mortain, NW France. He trained as a priest, became interested in cave art in 1900, and was responsible for the discovery of the decorated caves at Combarelles and Font-de-Gaume in the Dordogne the following year. Professor at the Collège de France (1929–47), his work marked the beginning of the study of palaeolithic art. |
