| biography:
| Composer and orchestra leader, born in Paris, France. From a family of musicians, he was a pupil of Massenet and Gédalge at the Conservatoire. He won the Prix de Rome in 1894 and began a career as a conductor, notably at the Opéra (1908–18). He succeeded Fauré as director of the Conservatoire (1920–40). His clean and elegant compositions for orchestra included La Procession Nocturne, for stage Le Miracle des Loups, an oratorio Job, and an opera Marouf. |
