| biography:
| Danish statesman and banker, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. A member of the Danish parliament (1971–84), he became leader of the Danish Liberal Party in 1978. He was minister of foreign affairs (1978–9) and minister of finance and deputy prime minister (1982–4). He became a member of the European Commission in 1984, and was a vice-president in charge of economic and monetary co-operation during 1985–95. |
