| Dutch soldier, politician, and prime minister (1925–6, 1933–9), born in Haarlemmermeer, W Netherlands. He fought with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army in Lombok with distinction, and served in Aceh (1895–1904) when he was adjutant to the governor-general. He left the service in 1907 and on return to Holland entered politics, joining the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP), and becoming party leader (1920). He served as minister for war (1911–13) when he reorganized the army, and was twice prime minister (1925–6, 1933–9). In 1914–22 he was a director of Bataafse Petroleum and Asiatic Petroleum, and was also editor of De Standaard. In 1940 he at first published pro-German views, but later denied them and supported the resistance. He was arrested and interned when the Germans invaded Russia. In the 1990s, historical research has accused him of the responsibility for massacres in the Netherlands East Indies during his military service in Lombok. |
