| Architect and sculptor, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. He was appointed stonemason and sculptor for Amsterdam (1594), and municipal architect (1612). Notable sculptural commissions were the tomb of William the Silent in Delft (1614–21) and the bronze statue of Erasmus in Rotterdam (1621). He designed the Amsterdam Exchange and three Amsterdam churches: Zuiderkerk (1603–14), Noorderkerk (1620–2), and his masterpiece, Westerkerk (1620–38). |
