| Painter, born in Deventer, The Netherlands. He studied at Utrecht, and was until c.1615 in Italy, where he came under the influence of Caravaggio. He excelled in chiaroscuro effects and in the faithful representation of physiognomical details and drapery, as in his ‘Jacob and Laban’ (1627, National Gallery, London). |
