| biography:
| One of two stadtholders of the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe in the Republic of the United Netherlands. He became Count of Nassau Dietz (1612–40), Stadtholder (1632–40) of Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe, and died unmarried. A relatively undistinguished soldier, he fought the Spanish and did not meddle in matters of state. He was wounded at the storming of Hulst, and died of his wounds. |
