| biography:
| Prince of Nassau Dietz, Count of Katzenelnbogen, the son of William Frederick and Albertine Agnes, Princess of Orange-Nassau. He succeeded his father as stadtholder in 1664 under his mother's regency. He was wounded in 1674 at Seneffe as colonel in the States' infantry, and took up his office in 1677. He disliked his cousin William III of Orange, and in the war with France (1672–8) rejected his authority, starting separate negotiations with Louis XIV, but the Grand Pensionary of Holland, Heinsius, managed to arrange an accommodation in 1694. In 1689 Hendrik was made third field-marshal by the States and fought at Fiennes and Steenkerken, and left the service in 1693. He had seven daughters and one son, Johan Willem Friso. |
