| Physicist, born in Berlin, Germany. He went to the USA in 1952, and taught at Purdue (1955–7) before joining the University of Chicago (1957). An adviser for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, he made major contributions to studies of the electronic and optical properties of amorphous and crystalline semiconductors and metals. |
