| Novelist, born in Batavia, former Netherlands East Indies. She worked as a journalist, and made her literary debut in 1964 with De Kameleon (The Chameleon), a collection of stories. In her fiction, the main characters are women who try to come to terms with the temptations of life, decay, and old age. In 1997 she attracted a large reading public with Het lied en de waarheid (The Song and the Truth), an autobiographical account of her childhood memories of the former Netherlands East Indies. |
