| Soprano, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. She made her debut in St Louis in 1923, and sang at the New York Metropolitan in 1937. She was the leading Wagnerian soprano at the Met from 1941, resigning after a dispute over her nightclub appearances (1953). She also worked in film and television, and wrote detective novels. |
