| Dancer, choreographer, and ballet director, born in Basel, N Switzerland. He studied at the School of American Ballet and the London Dance Centre, then joined Basel Ballet (1960–3), Cologne Ballet (1963–6), Royal Winnipeg Ballet (1966–7), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (1967–71), and Geneva Ballet (1971–3). As director of Basel Ballet from 1973, he improved what was strictly a provincial ballet company attached to the state opera into one of the best of Europe's smaller dance ensembles. |
