biography: Writer, born in Kreuzberg, Silesia. After active service in World War 2, he studied German, art history, and philosophy, and began a literary career. His early nature poetry, such as Die Furt (1952), is influenced by Wilhelm Lehmann and is full of imagery. Later, his style becomes more precise and subtle, and deals with contemporary themes such as war, homelessness, and the ephemeral nature of life. His novels include Die mittleren Jahre (1967) and Stunde der Überlebenden (1990), and he has also translated the poetry of John Keats. Among several awards is the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1976.
