| Physicist, born in Bonn, W Germany. He studied at the universities of Bonn, Berlin, Munich, and Breslau where he studied under Francis Simon. With his brother Fritz he fled from Germany in 1933, and joined Simon's group at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, working together on superconductivity. He moved to Bristol, was briefly interned in 1940, then released to work on the development of the atomic bomb. In 1946 he joined the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell. |
