| biography:
| Duke of Saxony (1142–80) and Bavaria (from 1156), the son of Heinrich X der Stolze. He extended his power base in the Slav area E of the Elbe, supported the colonization of the east and trade in the Baltic, promoted towns, and founded Munich and Schwerin. When he refused to provide military help to Friedrich Barbarossa in N Italy, he was placed under the ban of the Empire and exiled to England (1182). The only possession left to him was Braunschweig-Lüneburg. |
