| biography:
| Art historian, born in Winterthur, N Switzerland. He studied under Jacob Burckhardt, whom he succeeded as professor of art history at Basel in 1893. He was one of the founders of modern art history, pioneering the ‘scientific’ method of formal analysis, based on the systematic comparison of works of art in terms of contrasting stylistic features. His approach is expounded in three books: Renaissance and Baroque (1888), Classic Art (1899), and Principles of Art History (1915). |
