| German statesman and president (1959–69), born in Enkhausen, Westphalia, W Germany. He helped to found the Christian Democratic Party in Westphalia after World War 2, entered the Bundestag in 1949, and was minister of food, agriculture, and forestry (1953–9). In 1959 he succeeded Theodor Heuss as president of the German Federal Republic. |
