| Writer, born in Mönchengladbach, W Germany. A boilermaker, he began writing full-time following the success of his patriotic war poetry Herz, aufglühe dein Blut (1916) and Deutschland (1918). His writing was influenced by Expressionism and by Walt Whitman and focuses on the world of the working classes, as in his major work Mensch im Eisen (1925), which contains autobiographical elements. His novels were also popular. A Catholic and Socialist, he was a supporter of the National Socialists. |
